Birch Vale v Chapel
5th July 2010
Chapel’s final league of the season was away to Birch Vale, and it turned out to be a somewhat one- sided affair which the visitors won comfortably.
Chapel’s first wicket, that of Pickering, fell with the score on 33, when he was bowled by Sharp for 11 runs, which brought Wagstaffe to the wicket to join the in-form Wood. Wood batted beautifully before being caught immediately he had reached 50, but Wagstaffe then proceded to smash the ball to all parts of the ground with the bowlers not knowing where to bowl to him. Price scored 10 and Stanway 17 accompanying Wagstaffe who was unbeaten on 72 when the overs expired with Chapel on an impressive 170 for 3 wickets.
In Birch’s reply, Freeman hit a quick 21 before Morris uprooted his middle stump with the score on 28, but at the half way point Birch had only scored 51 runs which left them a lot to do in the second half of the innings. The next wicket didn’t fall until the 18th over with the score on 110, when Stanway took a great catch in the deep from the bowling of young Edwards to remove Bannister for a hard hit 41, and Bacon bowled a fine over conceding only 1 run when the run chase was on. Another of the youngsters, Stone, took an excellent catch down near his ankles to provide Wagstaffe with a wicket before Middleton took centre stage.
Price stumped Orphen and Chapman from consecutive balls, and with the crowd hoping for more, Middleton clean bowled Lomonzic to complete the hat trick, before being swamped by his team mates with the crowd going wild. Birch’s reply closed on 129 to leave Chapel comfortable winners by 41 runs.
Chapel v Dinting
29th June 2010
High flying Dinting, who had only lost one game this season in the North section, were the visitors for this cup quarter final which was played on another sunny evening at Chapel.
Critchlow won the toss and chose to have first use of another excellent Shirt prepared wicket and hopefully set a target which would be out of reach of the visitors.
Pickering and Wood once again put together a great opening stand for Chapel, hitting the ball to all parts of the ground, including an all- run 5 followed next ball by a 3 which left both batsmen gasping for oxygen. Pickering , who has had a great season with the bat, had to retire when he reached 52 and Wood became the first wicket to fall after compiling a super 40 when he was caught off the bowling of Clayton with the score on 88. Wagstaffe and Critchlow then set about the Dinting bowling adding another 57 runs before Critchlow, on 17, was beaten by a slower ball from Woolleson who held a comfortable return catch. Wagstaffe blasted a quickfire 30 before he too fell to Woolleson’s slower ball for another caught and bowled, and the innings closed on a respectable 154, a stiff target for any team to chase.
Dinting made a positive start, and when A.Woolleson was run out by Middleton in the 9th over the score stood at 49. Chapel’s fielding was not at it’s best with several simple catches being put down (special mention goes to Jordan Pickering who set a club record by dropping 4 catches in 1 game), but the next wicket to fall, that of Wyche, was due to an outstanding effort by Middleton who seemed to have missed the chance before reaching out to take a great one handed catch at full stretch off Pickering’s bowling. L.Woolleson scored an impressive 38 before he was caught off a skyer by Wagstaffe from the bowling of Gratton, back after injury. Gratton returned the favour catching Stott from the bowling of Wagstaffe and Clayton scored a quick 22 before running out of overs, and the visitor’s reply had reached 130 when the innings closed.
Chapel v Buxworth
28th June 2010
Chapel entertained local rivals Buxworth on another lovely evening, and ran out comfortable winners by 8 wickets in their penultimate league game.
Gilbride and Hammond opened with a stand of 21 before the latter was bowled by a Gratton yorker which uprooted his off stump, and Gilbride soon followed, caught by Wagstaffe off the bowling of Morris with the score on 24. Pickering clean bowled N.Critchlow and Gemmell was well caught by S.Critchlow in the slips also from Pickering’s bowling. Cowans was caught in the slips from the bowling of young Edwards who took 1-14 from his spell and Middleton picked up 2 wickets thanks to catches by Pickering and Singleton, the latter being a great diving effort at mid off to close the innings on 83.
Price was soon out when Chapel replied, but Wood and Pickering took the score to 47 before the next wicket fell, that being Wood’s for a well made 22. Chapel lost no more wickets as they chased down the target, and Pickering finished on 37, and Stanway scored a quickfire 19 to take Chapel over the finishing line for an 8 wicket win.
Chapel v Buxton
21st June 2010
Buxton visited Chapel for this local derby, and left well beaten by our boys who put in a very good performance in every department of the game.
Buxton had no answer to Chapel’s opening attack of Critchlow and Gratton, and after 10 overs the score was only 16 runs for 2 wicket, one falling to Gratton and the other being the prized wicket of Frohwein, run out by a direct hit from Critchlow fielding at cover. Morris then took over and clean bowled the next 3 batsmen to finish with 3-31 from his spell, and only Hawkes showed any resistance with a fine 43 not out of the final total of 74.
Pickering and Wood opened the reply with a stand of 33 before Wood was out lbw to Frohwein for 11, who also bowled Stanway for a duck first ball. The next wicket fell with the score on 54 when Pickering was bowled, also by Frohwein for a fine 31 runs, but Critchlow with 17 and Wagstaffe with 10 saw the home team home without further loss for a 7 wicket win.
Hayfiel v Chapel
14th June 2010
Chapel posted a score of 107 at the end of their overs, a total that was well short of enough on Hayfield’s little ground, and this lack of runs proved decisive at the end.
Wood 17,Critchlow 20, Wagstaffe 21 and Singleton 17 were the main contributors to Chapel’s 107, but most of the batsmen threw away their wickets when they looked well set to press on to bigger scores, and at the end of the 20 overs Chapel set the home side a total that would be difficult to defend.
Critchlow took 2 early wickets, but nobody could dismiss young Kirton, who hung around while Proctor smashed the ball to all parts, before he was bowled by Price for 48. Kirton scored 34 not out to go with his 3-11 to take Hayfield over the finishing line for a comfortable victory.
