Chapel vs Hayfield
Chapel’s winning run continued with a somewhat unconvincing victory over Hayfield on a lovely Wednesday evening at
Willow Drive.
A total of 22 wides were bowled during the Hayfield innings as the home bowlers, Stanway excepted, struggled to find their line and length on a wicket giving some assistance to the bowler who could put the ball in the right place. The first wicket fell in the 4th over when Gratton took a good catch at square leg to remove Proctor off the bowling of Critchlow but it was with the introduction of Stanway replacing Gratton that things started to happen for the home side. Shaw had batted well for his 28 runs including a top edged 6 that just cleared
Pickering on the boundary, when next ball Stanway produced a beauty to remove his off stump, and 2 balls later he had Kirton caught behind by Price off a thin outside edge. In his next over Stanway had
Richardson caught at slip by Maybury, reacting very smartly after keeper Price had parried the ball into the air. Quick fielding and good throws from Critchlow and Middleton produced 2 run outs before Morris bowled Jennison and the returning Gratton took the final wicket, uprooting Robinson’s middle stump, the innings closing on 78-8.
Chapel’s reply started off disastrously with young spinner Kirton removing Wood, Price and Morris in his first 3 overs to leave the home side in trouble at 16-3 after the 6th over. The decline continued when Critchlow was caught by Davies at mid-on off a full toss that should have cleared the rope, and when Singleton was clean bowled by Proctor the score showed 28-5 with the home side in deep trouble. Maybury and Wagstaffe came together and produced a match winning stand of 47 that turned the game in Chapel’s favour. Sensible running and some fine shots through the covers, particularly by Wagstaffe, together with some powerful back foot shots from Maybury gradually brought the target within reach, and when Maybury was out for 16 only 4 runs were needed for victory which was sealed when
Pickering pulled the ball over mid wicket for the winning run. Wagstaffe batted very maturely to finish with 37 not out to see Chapel over the winning line before the crucial last game at Whaley next week when victory will see them champions of their section.
Chapel vs Dove Holes
League leaders Chapel got off to a great start as Gratton had the dangerous Jones caught behind by Price off the first ball. He took the next three wickets to finish with figures of 4-3-2-4. After a spell from Stanway, Morris bowled Longden (10). Middleton bowled two overs for 14 runs, while at the other end Hammond bowled an excellent spell of 3-1-6-4, helped by catches from Morris, Wood and Critchlow, as Dove Holes finished on 42 all out from 13 overs.
Price and Wood then knocked off the required runs.
Buxworth vs Chapel
Chapel were soon in trouble as Rothwell took the wickets of Wood, Price and Gratton, all caught off extravagant shots, and when Hammond was run out soon afterwards, the visitors were reeling on 33-4. Singleton took charge and found the legside boundary with some fine shots as wickets continued to fall at the other end.S.Critchlow (16 not out) came in at number 11 and, batting sensibly with Singleton (39 not out), took the score to 99-9. Rothwell took 3-20 from his spell, and the other wicket was taken by Gilbride (1-19).
Buxworth's reply started disastrously against the opening attack of Gratton and S.Critchlow, and only Gemmell put up any resistance to top score with nine runs before being caught by Morris off Critchlow. Price took a good catch behind the stumps to remove Gilbride, and the rest of the Buxworth side were clean bowled.
Gratton bowled with good pace to finish with 4-13, and Critchlow finished with 5-10.
U13s
Chapel vs Birch Vale
Chapel fielded a young side and included new recruits Jack Stevens, who took the best catch of the season so far, and Sam Cowley, who batted solidly. Ben Shelmerdine and Harry Hibbert bowled well and restricted the Birch openers to few runs. Two wickets were taken in the first spell. Will James added a bit of pace and took two wickets in a great spell. Charlie Edwards also picked up a wicket as Birch finished on 285. Chapel started strongly, but despite boundaries for Josh Kennedy, George Stone, Ben Shelmerdine and batsman of the week Will James, the pace and accuracy of the Birch attack proved too much as Chapel managed 215.
Buxworth vs Chapel
CHAPEL were always going to be up against it playing a very experienced Buxworth side, but Ben Shelmerdine and Connor Lomas bowled well at the start for the Chapel side against some very positive batting from the Buxworth openers. Once again, Chapel gave a very spirited fielding performance with George Stone and Paul Bacon taking terrific catches, while Will Hammond took four catches behind the stumps.Charlie Edwards managed to secure three wickets in his two overs, although the strength of the Buxworth batsman had started to tell as by then they seemed to be hitting boundaries at will. The Buxworth innings finished on 329 which is the biggest score that Chapel have conceded.
Captain Ross Hammond started well with the bat and there were boundaries for Will James, Will Hammond, Harry Hibbert and Josh Kennedy, but the Chapel innings fell away and they eventually finished on 217.

Will James and Will Jones then continued the solid performance with Will James hitting two glorious boundaries. Newcomer Sam Johnson and Ivan Heathcote then added 12 before George Stone (10) and Charlie Edwards (16) finished the innings off, Stone hit three boundaries and Edwards hit two. The Chapel innings finished on a very competitive score of 261.
Buxworth’s reply began in a confident manner with Brooks and Wright adding 10 runs, Lambert and Smith got into a bit of difficulty against the bowling of Sam Johnson as he picked up two wickets on debut but both batted very well. Longden, Daly, Ridgeway and Fletcher then chased hard to get the required runs but the innings closed with Buxworth still 22 runs short of the Chapel score. A great game of cricket enjoyed by players and proud parents alike.
Whaley Bridge vs Chapel
