High Lane U17’s v Chapel U17’s
Chapel travelled to a wet High Lane to find a pitch which shared the appearance of soggy sponge cake served in the school canteen. Batting first by default, openers Joe Jackson and Dan Christie negotiated the opening overs well picking up boundaries on an outfield that surprisingly wasn’t too slow. Christie was in fine form and although Jackson was caught for 19 he continued to reach 56n.o and with the backing of 15n.o from Tom Kelly, Chapel reached 103-1 in their 20 overs. The High Lane innings was held back by some excellent bowling and intense fielding in the boggy outfield as the Chapel fielders showed they weren’t shy of dirtying their whites. High Lane could only reach 94 all out as they were stifled by tight lines from the Chapel bowlers who returned the following figures: Jackson 5-0-24-1, Ferdani 4.3-0-14-2, Candlin 5-0-19-2 and Jake Pickering 5-0-32-3.
Buxton U17's v Chapel U17’s
Chapel made the short trip to Buxton on an evening that was paradise for the local midge population. Batting first on a slow wicket that offered some turn Chapel got off to a fine start thanks to Joe Jackson and Dan Christie. Christie fell caught at cover to Stratford, 2-27, and Jackson soon after for 19. Tom Kelly played a patient knock to top-score with 22 and the lower order chipped in with handy boundaries but Chapel failed to find any real momentum against the leg-spin of Luke Smith, 4-19. However thanks to an extras count of 20 Chapel made a respectable 100. In reply opening bowlers Jackson and Jake Pickering gave few chances to score and after 8 overs Buxton were well behind the rate at 23-0. Dan Christie removed Smith in his first over and Todd Candlin produced a fine spell to finish with 5-1-13-3. Tom Forder was the only thorn in Chapel’s side as he played well for 37 but when he was out to a smart stumping by Rees Maybury the game was over as a contest. Jordan Pickering and Sean Critchlow both picked up a wicket and Kelly capped a fine team fielding performance with a direct hit run-out as Buxton were left 82-7.

Dove Holes U15's v Chapel U15’s
Chapel batted first at Dove Holes and were soon in trouble at 10 for 2 as Maybury and Wagstaffe were both out cheaply to rash shots, and it was left to Wood and Critchlow to rebuild the innings, a task that they carried out with some sensible batting and quick running to take Chapel to 58 before the third wicket fell. Wood was unluckily run out for 25 going for a quick single as the need to accelerate the score became necessary, and Critchlow followed soon after for 21 bowled behind his legs by Moore. Young Hammond batted well before being bowled by Jones, and this brought Stanway and Gratton together at the crease. They took the score to a respectable innings total of 93 thanks to some good hitting by Gratton who scored 25 n o. well supported by Stanway with 9 n.o.
The home innings never really got going as they were tied down by Chapel’s opening pair of Critchlow and Gratton who between them took 3 wickets for 21 runs from 7 overs. The dangerous Buckley was run out by a superb pick up, throw and direct hit by Gratton who then took an excellent one handed catch to remove Goodwin. Stanway bowled Jones with a beauty and Critchlow took a sharp catch in the covers to remove Ortton off the bowling of Pickering, whose throw also ran out Dye with the help of wicket keeper Price. Hammond bowled 2 commendable overs for one so young and Singleton, who was on a hat-trick following wickets with the last two balls he bowled in a previous game, took a wicket thanks to a fine overhead catch by Stanway in the covers, and the home innings ended on 67 for 8. This was an encouraging performance by the young Chapel team whose fielding and bowling was of a very high class, and hopefully they can continue this in their final 2 fixtures, away at Hayfield and at home to Whaley Bridge.
Chapel U15’s v Buxton U15's
Chapel entertained Buxton on a damp Wednesday evening, and had to bowl with a wet ball for most of the innings as showers continued to fall. Marsden and O’Malley both retired having scored 50’s for Buxton, well supported by Bartlett who scored a quick 19. At the end of their 20 overs, Buxton set Chapel the formidable target of 150 which would have been a difficult task under dry conditions never mind heavy rain.
Maybury and Wagstaffe opened for Chapel, but only 4 balls were bowled before the heavens opened and play had to be abandoned with Chapel’s score on 4 for 0 wickets, and both sides had to settle for a point each.

Chapel vs Buworth
The Under 11's played against Buxworth on 25th May at Chapel. On a very blustery day Buxworth batted first and were immediately in trouble as Charlie Edwards took two wickets in his first over including a very sharp stumping from Joe Berry. Newcomer, Brandon Yeomans also managed to secure a wicket in his second over, as did Will James. The fielding was also very tight as Ben Shelmadine and Brandon Yeomans held on to some very difficult catches.
Josh Kennedy and Brandon Yeomans then got Chapel's innings off to a flier with a net runs score of 16 with both batsmen hitting glorios boundaries. Harry Hibbert and Joe Berry both had net run scores of 13 to help Chapel amass 261 as their final score. A tremendous performance by the boys, both on the field and the sporting way that they played the game. A big thank you goes out to the parents for helping with the arrangements for the day, inlcuding preparing the ground and umpiring the game.
Dove Holes vs Chapel
The Under 11’s had their first game of the season against Dove Holes on 8th May and for 6 of the boys it was their first taste of competitive cricket. They performed superbly and, although they had not played together previously, or even met, they gelled as a team and were constantly giving each other encouragement.
Chapel batted first and it took Dove Holes 12 overs before they were able to claim their first wicket, pick of the first 4 Chapel batsmen were Richard Lee (13 including three boundaries) and Charlie Edwards (7). Harry Hibbert (5) and Will Hammond (5) also chipped in late on to bring the Chapel score to an impressive 260 off their allotted 20 overs. Dove struggled early in their innings against some impressive bowling from Will Hammond and Jamie longdon who both secured early wickets that put Dove on the back foot. Josh Kennedy and Will James also bowled really well and Jordan Burgen only allowed 1 bye to be scored as he kept wicket restricting Dove to a final total of 205.
Chapel v Whaley Bridge
It was always going to be difficult to repeat Thursday’s performance against an older and more experienced Whaley side but, fielding first, Chapel restricted the vistors to 227 after their 20 overs. This was down to some tremendous Chapel bowling with Will Hammond and Jordan Bergin taking a wicket each, Charlie Edwards taking 2 and Will James taking 2 in his final over.
Chapel had a steady start in their reply with Will Hammond scoring 5 to keep Chapel in the running. Some fine bowling by Whaley in the middle of the innings however resulted in Ben Shelmadine and Joe Berry having to throw the bat at the end to try to recover the running. Both batted extremely well with Ben finishing on 5 and Joe on 6 including a brilliant pulled boundary.
Whaley eventually ran out winners by 40 runs but the Chapel team can be proud of themselves for the way they fought to the end. |
